And then there was Book.

Mal had little use for the preacher when he first signed on. He paid his way with some cash, and also with some fruits and vegetables he'd taken with him when he departed Southdown Abbey and decided to, as he had put it, walk the world awhile.

Seeing as Serenity 's crew lived most times on reconstituted protein, it endeared the shepherd to the crew something considerable.

Over time, Book had proven to be a lot more than just a shepherd. When Dobson revealed himself to be a fed, Book was the one who disarmed him, rendering him unconscious—and then, vexingly, refusing to let Jayne finish the job. There was Mal's rescue from Niska, during which Book showed a capacity for firearms that one didn't often find in the average man of God. And then there was the time Book got shot on Jiangyin; Simon had gone missing, and so they took the shepherd to a fed hospital, where one look at his ID got him VIP treatment, and Serenity on its way without a second glance after he got fixed up.

Now Book stood before Mal, a smal smile under his silver goatee, his wild hair tied down in respectable cornrows.

"Preacher," Mal said with a nod.

"Mal." Book returned the nod.

"Good to see you again. You look different."

The smal smile widened. "Real y? I'd say you look a mite worse.

In fact, in my professional opinion, you al look like hel ."

"That's what we al love about you, preacher, your ability to make us al feel good about ourselves." Everyone laughed at Mal's words, which defused any possible problems. The fact was, they did look like hel , which was hardly a surprise, but Mal wasn't ready to talk about it just yet.

Book looked to have got that, as the next thing he said was,

"Wel , as it happens, I think I have a salve for what ails you al ." He grinned. "Dinner's in half an hour."

"Music to my ears," Wash said with a laugh of his own.

Soon they were al gathered in the communal kitchen, eating blessedly real food, and talking about everything and nothing.

There was plenty of food, plenty of laughter, and plenty of joy, for al of which Mal was powerful grateful. Hiroko spent the entire time on Kaylee's lap, getting salad dressing al over his face and Kaylee's pants; the mechanic didn't seem to mind.

At one point, Jayne handed Book a box of cigars. "These're them Koobanes you said you like s'much. Fel a I got 'em from on Boros says they're the best, and he ain't never steered me wrong in the past—mostly on account'a he'd know I'd cut him if he did."

Book grateful y took the box, and didn't even correct Jayne's pronunciation of "Cuban," which Mal found to be right neighborly.

He knew they were named after a place on Earth-That-Was that produced cigars, and he recol ected that Jayne carried on a fair piece after he found them on Boros, saying that the preacher'd been looking for 'em since he left the abbey.
